Growing up in rural Minnesota, Jack Ritter had a dream to make it big in New York City. In June 2003, Jack thinks he has achieved that dream. He is living in the City and is a lawyer at the prestigious New York firm of Garrick Knight Scott & Grant. Jack’s only problem is that his job has been interfering with his personal life. He is in the middle of a dry spell with no end in sight.
That changes late one night, when Jack receives a call from his ex-girlfriend, Sarah, who invites him over for a drink. Soon after he arrives at her apartment, the dry spell is gloriously and happily over. Jack’s euphoria is short-lived, though, after Sarah discovers a lump on his right testicle, a lump that is later diagnosed as testicular cancer.
Over the next four months, as Jack undergoes surgery and chemotherapy, he struggles physically, mentally and emotionally. Yet, throughout his trials, Jack is surrounded by Sarah and other friends, his family and others he meets who give him humor, hope, strength and love. With their help, he learns the truth behind the lyrics, “In a New York minute, everything can change.”
A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation.

The author gives hope to those who find themselves in the same situation. He puts you on the streets of New York with incredible detail. Great book. He has written something his children can read with pride, seeing the strength of their father and his ability to get back up when life changes your plans. Tremendous example of courage. Everything Can Change edition by Brian Kemper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Great read. Brian brings you into the life of a New York lawyer, who plays video games, knows lyrics to all the songs, is into comic books and super heroes, and has to act grown-up sometimes and work, too. Just a regular guy, sort of. I can picture the walks around Manhattan, the restaurants, the offices, the characters. The main character, Jack and his friends and family are very real and likeable. Some good humor and some real life issues are brought up, and Brian puts it all in print very nicely. Again, a great read. Looking forward to his next story.
In his first novel, Brian Kemper--a survivor of cancer himself--writes the story of his fictional counterpart, Jack Ritter, with remarkable maturity and steadiness. The narrative is both heartbreaking and humorous as Jack, his family, and his friends come to terms with Jack's testicular cancer. This is a must read for anyone faced with this disease as well as those who find themselves supporting someone with cancer. Kemper makes a sensitive subject accessible to a wide audience with his clean, crisp writing style and his ability to find humor and hope in the darkest of times.Set in the shadows of 9/11, Everything Can Change transcends the personal health crisis of one man as Jack grows not only in self-awareness, but in mindfulness of the significance of life itself. The novel seamlessly morphs from a tale of the adventures of a small town transplant in New York City into an existential story of a man in discovery of meaning. Jack, a self-described nerd in his twenties, is forced to come of age with the growing realization that his cancer is his body's expression an aching emptiness in his soul. A loner by choice, his loneliness catches up with him and sweeps the reader along as Jack discovers making a living is not as important as having a life worth living. Needless to say, I highly recommend Kemper's book to readers looking for a good story with likeable characters and insight that radiates from the shadows of the human heart.

A fabulous read! I finished in 2 days and was laughing and crying throughout the whole book. What a beautiful story of a difficult and challenging time. It's so good to see the raw emotions involved in a story about cancer. Well done to the author, Brian Kemper. I look forward to whatever he comes out with next!
